CALGARY – It will be an online celebration on an unprecedented scale.
Hundreds of people from 15 Alberta colleges and technical institutes will gather online with Advanced Education and Technology Minister Doug Horner Dec. 5 to celebrate the fifth anniversary of eCampusAlberta.
Using web casting technology, all 15 campuses – spanning the province, from Grande Prairie and Slave Lake in the north to Lethbridge and Medicine Hat in the south – will celebrate together. Minister Horner will address the gathering at 3 p.m. from his office in the legislature.
Media in Calgary and surrounding communities are invited to attend the online celebration Dec. 5 from 2:45 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at: Bow Valley College, Mount Royal College or SAIT Polytechnic (details below).
eCampusAlberta celebrated its fifth anniversary in November. The consortium of Alberta colleges and technical institutes was established in 2002 to provide access to accredited online certificate, diploma and applied degree programs offered by the member campuses.
For the past five years, Alberta’s ability to serve students via electronic delivery has taken off thanks largely to the innovation, creativity and hard work of eCampusAlberta. Our new Roles and Mandates Framework focuses on our ability to utilize options that provide flexibility and quality and certainly e-learning is a growing and integral part of Alberta’s advanced education system.

Registrations in online courses offered by eCampusAlberta totaled 5,189 in 2006/07 (the latest fiscal year) – up approximately 45 per cent from last year when 3,541 registrations were recorded. In only five years, registrations in online post-secondary courses offered through the consortium have soared to 13,879, as of Nov. 2007.
There are nearly 30 provincially accredited programs and 300 courses offered online through eCampusAlberta.
“Online education in Alberta has really taken off in the past few years, creating greater flexibility and choice for learners,” said Tricia Donovan, executive director, eCampusAlberta.
“Our fifth year anniversary marks an important milestone for eCampusAlberta. Our success to date is a real testament to the commitment of the people at all 15 member institutions who have worked so hard over the years to increase access to post-secondary education for learners across the province,” said Donovan.
