CALGARY – eCampusAlberta’s leadership in the field of online education is being recognized by the U.S.-based Chair Academy which has awarded the 2011 International Exemplary Leader Award to the eCampusAlberta administrative team.

The prestigious award recognizes eCampusAlberta’s contributions to academic and administrative leadership in the field of online education in the province of Alberta.

“The eCampusAlberta team has shown consistent leadership in online education in Alberta for more than eight years, especially in areas such as quality standards for online curriculum and research into best practices for serving online students,” says Dr. Janet Paterson-Weir, Provost and Executive Vice President, Academic at Grant MacEwan University and Chair of eCampusAlberta’s Management Committee.

“This team is most deserving of this award and, on behalf of all of our members, I congratulate them on this achievement,” Paterson-Weir says.

Members of the team traveled to Dallas, TX for the Chair Academy’s twentieth Annual International Conference – Strategic Leadership, which is being held March 22 to 25, at the Sheraton Dallas Hotel. The award is being presented today.

“We are honoured as a team to receive such a prestigious award from an organization that is so well recognized in the field of educational leadership. It was an outstanding experience to have the opportunity to attend this conference and accept this award,” says eCampusAlberta Executive Director, Dr. Tricia Donovan.

“I thank all members of my team for their hard work in advancing the field of online education and increasing opportunities for Albertans to study in this way,” Donovan says.

The Chair Academy is a 20-year-old organization that designs and promotes world-class training programs and services to advance academic and administrative leadership for post-secondary institutions world-wide.

eCampusAlberta is a consortium of 15 Alberta post-secondary institutions (11 colleges, two universities and two polytechnics) that was established in 2002 to facilitate access to high quality online learning opportunities. The organization enables students from across the province to access more than 60 accredited online certificate, diploma and applied degree programs and 600 courses offered by the 15 member institutions.

Registrations in courses offered through eCampusAlberta courses rose by approximately 39 per cent in 2009/10 to 13,107. This compares with 9,414 registrations in 2008/09. The consortium expects to exceed 17,000 registrations for 2010/11.
