In Support of Expanding Educational Access – Via E-Learning to Rural Aboriginal Communities

This small, qualitative study explored the needs of Aboriginal adult learners residing in selected First
Nations communities in the Bow Valley College and NorQuest College Service Region. The primary
focus of this research explored interests, opportunities, and readiness of Aboriginal adult learners
and rural First Nations communities to engage with e‐learning program delivery.

Accessibility to eCampusAlberta for Persons with Disabilities: Systemic Challenges and Proposed Solutions

The emerging popularity of online learning, made possible through eCampusAlberta, has given Albertans with disabilities the opportunity to access courses offered by institutions throughout the province. This paper identifies many of the challenges and suggests solutions that enable learners with disabilities to enjoy their online programs and receive the supports that are necessary for their success.

Successful Practices for Supporting Distance Learners

This new report, created by Alberta North with funding provided by eCampusAlberta, provides detailed information about the successful practices used by Alberta North Community Access Point coordinators to support distance learners in community-based facilities in northern Alberta.

Accessibility to E-Learning for Persons with Disabilities: Strategies, Guidelines, and Standards

Addressing accessibility issues has been identified as an important area of research by eCampusAlberta members. It’s a field the consortium is working to develop further through new projects, including this paper, written by Flo Brokop of NorQuest College. The paper outlines the principles of Universal Design for Learning and provides many suggestions about ways instructors and course developers can ensure their online offerings maximize accessibility for all learners. It also includes best practice teaching strategies and guidelines for reducing barriers in the online environment.
