Backgrounder

"With the great support and encouragement of the staff, I enrolled in my first anatomy and physiology online course. I am 40 and I have never studied a science subject in my life but I was able to earn an A in my mid-term and an A- in my final. Not only do I feel proud of myself, but I also really appreciate my online instructor and all the help from the support group at eCampusAlberta."
- Louise Wong, Practical Nursing, Bow Valley College

eCampusAlberta is a consortium of 15 Alberta post-secondary institutions (11 colleges, two universities, one technical institute and one polytechnic) that was established in 2002 to facilitate greater access to high quality online learning opportunities. The organization enables students from across the province to access more than 60 accredited online certificate, diploma and applied degree programs and 400 courses offered by the 15 member institutes.

Participation in online education has increased steadily since the consortium was formed. Registrations in eCampusAlberta courses rose by approximately 38 per cent in 2009/10 to 12,960. This compares with 9,414 registrations in 2008/09.

Lead and partner model

Offering online courses through the consortium makes it possible for students to take advantage of the lead and partner course delivery model. The lead institution develops and offers the course or program and provides the instruction and materials through the learning management system. Students have the option of selecting a partner institution (one of the other eCampusAlberta members), which provides the student with support services such as access to the library, exam supervision and study skills support.

Member institutions

eCampusAlberta’s current membership includes: Bow Valley College (Calgary), Grande Prairie Regional College, Grant MacEwan University (Edmonton), Keyano College (Fort McMurray), Lakeland College (Lloydminster, Vermilion), Lethbridge College, Medicine Hat College, Mount Royal University (Calgary), NAIT (Edmonton), NorQuest College (Edmonton), Northern Lakes College (Slave Lake and Grouard), Olds College, Portage College (Lac La Biche), Red Deer College and SAIT Polytechnic (Calgary).
